He watched as Flannery began to flip out, throwing a huge hissy fit, kicking her legs and screaming at him, even going as far as to hit him. “Flannery.” He said, while she was freaking out, just letting her get it all out. “Flan Flan.” Marlon tried again, scratching the back of his head as he watched her, flexing his muscles so when she hit him, it wouldn’t hurt a tiny bit. “Duckling….!” He was trying to get her attention, affectionately speaking to her with her tiny pet names. “Are you okay now?” He wasn’t being rude when he said this, he was legitimately concerned. Hell, he wouldn’t have even cared if she threw things at him. None of that mattered and he figured it never did.
“I mean…We haven’t even had our first date and you’re already shoving me against a wall…” He chuckled a bit and flipped her, having her back now against the wall allowing him to move in close to her face. “And I forgive you. I always will forgive you.” He looked apologetic at the moment. He always caused trouble, and he never ceased to be a thorn in her side it seemed. “And I’d never be mad at you. You know I love you right?” He wasn’t afraid as he said this, actually he was very straight faced, showing his seriousness. “It just came to me one day, you know… I don’t mind that you never noticed me, but I noticed you. How did you think I got all AP classes?” He chuckled deeply and shook his head. “You gotta study sometime. My time was middle school. I wanted to impress you. That didn’t seem to happen though… But I’m not mad…Like I said I could never be mad.”
He shut his eyes for a moment and smiled. “I mean, there’s nothing in any kind of rule book saying you have to notice me. That I’m aware of, and even now I’m appreciative of your existence being near me.” Marlon leaned in, frightfully close. “It’s just, I noticed I loved you when I got nice and close…Then my heart starts to beat fast and my head spins…”
“I’m totally crazy for you Flannery, and you know what?” He pushed away, moving to lift up her homework again. “I’m willing to wait for as long as I need to… I feel one day you’ll notice how great I am… Everyone does at some point, you know?” He handed her the homework. “So come on, let’s do your homework. Wanna copy mine?”
She felt the turn, her back now against the wall. Her bottom lip quivered a bit, scared of what was to come.
“And I’d never be mad at you. You know I love you right?”
Flannery’s eyes widened. “W-..What..?” He loves me..? Marlon had been watching her throughout the school year- he’d noticed her and he’d been waiting for her to give him some recognition back. In a weird way.. It was endearing.. But at the same time.. I could definitely use this against him.. Flannery wasn’t normally a mean person, although she did know when she had the upper hand. Marlon was the most popular boy in their grade.. He stood out amongst all the others- and all the girls constantly talked about him. And he has a crush on me..! Flannery almost started to laugh- the idea of Marlon having a crush on her seemed ridiculous, especially due to the fact she liked him so long ago as well.. Were those feelings truly gone though..? “It’s nice.. that you care about me..” She trailed off, trying to find a way to word this correctly. “And… I mean, I don’t think you’re a horrible guy…”
Although she felt strong, powerful even at this point.. She couldn’t help but feel embarrassed. No one had ever confessed to her before.. This was also a new experience. My first kiss and love confession all on the same day. Flannery smiled, she couldn’t help it; today was just turning out to be so .. so weird. “Maybe you could help me later…” She looked to the side, the blush still slightly on her cheeks, then smiled up at him. Even if she did have feelings for him.. She wouldn’t— COULDN’T tell him that. He’d get a big head… Or feel full of himself- and that’s not something she could live with- not right now anyway.. And he’d probably kiss me a lot and try to sneak into my bed at night and— Her face turned crimson again as she tried to disperse the thoughts currently running rampant through her mind.
If she turned him down now.. She’d feel absolute gratification, right? She’d feel total power.. right? Because there was just no way I could have feelings for that guy..! So if I do turn him down.. I’ll always have that over him. Isn’t that what you want, Flannery..?
Then again.. Marlon is kind of the perfect guy.. He’s nice enough.. and He obviously cares about me; we have some what of a past together.. I doubt he remembers much of it though. He’s very smart, and admirable.. He has a lot of good qualities about him.. Was she making a mistake..? Was it wrong of her to toss him aside just like that? Maybe she owed it to herself- and then again.. if they did go on a date and she told him it wasn’t going to work out afterwards, wouldn’t that be all the more gratifying? Because people would see us together..! Y-Yeah..!! Or at least that’s what she told herself.. “M-Maybe.. one date couldn’t hurt..?”
Her cheeks flared up upon saying these words- Flannery had never gone on a date before.. So this would also be another new experience. “A-After you .. help me with my homework of course…” She looked away, shifting her eyesight from his. “N-Not that I need your h-help though! I just.. Wanted to check and make sure that my problems are actually incorrect like you claim..!” She had far too much pride to admit that she needed help.. At least for a few problems- “But I don’t copy— That would be cheating..! And I certainly don’t cheat.”
